Research and Technology in Inter-War – Complete Guide

Research

Updated:

Research is one of the main long-term progression systems in Inter-War. Buildings strengthen individual planets, while technology opens capabilities for the whole account. Research can lead to new ships, colonization, better fleet options, espionage and military development. The best plan is therefore not to level everything evenly, but to fund technologies that prepare the next real objective.

Choose the objective before the technology

Ask what the research is supposed to unlock or improve. A player preparing the first colony has different priorities from a player building an active fleet. An economy-focused account can postpone some combat development.

Laboratory and requirements

Research needs both infrastructure and resources. Before a large project, check the full chain of prerequisites so that a missing building or technology does not unexpectedly stop progress.

Research queue and time planning

Long research times make order important. Keep the research system working on technologies that support the current development plan instead of choosing levels without a purpose.

Research for colonization

The first colony is a clear technology goal. The Colony Ship requires Shipyard level 4 and Impulse Drive level 3. Later, Colonization Technology affects empire capacity through the rule 9 + Colonization Technology level + additional planet slots.

Research for fleet development

Fleet players need technologies that unlock ships and improve operational possibilities. Drives are especially important because they are connected to ship progression and mobility.

Technology should not outgrow the economy. Unlocking ships is less useful if the account cannot afford to build and fuel them.

Espionage and information

As fleet value and mission cost increase, information becomes more valuable. Research that supports scouting reduces decisions made blindly and can protect much larger investments elsewhere.

Combat technology

Combat research should reflect actual playstyle. An economy-and-expansion account does not need the same immediate priorities as a player who regularly commits ships to military missions.

Research and economy

Technology can consume different resource ratios from buildings. Crystal may become the main limitation for several stages while metal creates a surplus. Adjust production or collect resources from several planets before expensive research.

Research in a multi-planet empire

Resources may be produced across many worlds, but research goals affect the entire account. Transport lets local production support technology developed elsewhere.

How should research order be chosen?

  1. Choose the next objective.
  2. Check every prerequisite.
  3. Identify the missing building or technology.
  4. Prepare the correct resource mix.
  5. Make sure the research does not prevent a more important project.
  6. After completion, use the new capability instead of immediately chasing another level.

Three example profiles

Economic player

Prioritize technology that supports growth, expansion and the ability to finance larger projects.

Fleet player

Ship requirements, drives, scouting and active fleet systems matter more, but the economy still needs to pay for operations.

Balanced account

Alternate phases: economy funds research, research opens expansion or fleet capability, and those systems create more future income and options.

Common mistakes

  • Researching without a clear objective.
  • Ignoring building and technology prerequisites.
  • Spending all crystal on a level with no resources left to use the unlocked capability.
  • Growing fleet technology faster than the economy.
  • Finishing long research with no next step prepared.

Three practical research paths

GoalResearch focusCheck before investing
First colonyRequirements leading to the Colony Ship, including Shipyard 4 and Impulse Drive 3Also prepare 10,000 metal, 20,000 crystal, 10,000 deuterium and starting colony resources
Fleet and logisticsTechnologies that unlock required ships, drives and operational capabilityCan the economy afford construction and repeated flights?
Active military playScouting, mobility and technologies that support the fleet you actually useDo you have enough production, deuterium and recovery capacity?

Example: planning research backward from a goal

If the target is the first colony, not every available technology deserves equal priority. Map the Colony Ship requirements, prepare Shipyard 4 and Impulse Drive 3 and start reserving the required resources at the same time. When the prerequisite finishes, the account can immediately use the capability instead of holding a research level with no practical follow-up.
